It’s a sad day for NSFW artists…again. Another platform has fallen prey to the payment processors and their crusade to police online content.

SubscribeStar is another website in the chain to get hit with the hammer from their Payment Processor overlords.

The real shame is that SubscribeStar came at a time when Patreon got slapped for the same damn reason. Many users feel this was a stab in the back.

Unfortunately, the root issue here is the same as it was with Patreon, Visa and Mastercard.

Let’s talk specifically about the changes. This X user, incontinentcell does a great breakdown comparing the old TOS to the new.

The big target here is loli. Which is a very controversial topic nowadays. The danger is the line:

Any depiction of underage or underage-appearing characters in sexualized circumstances, regardless of artistic style, medium, or whether the content is fictional, illustrated, animated, or digitally rendered

Then, to put the nail in the coffin, we have this:

Sexualized depictions of characters from films, games, anime, comics, or other media that are canonically underaged, even if such characters are aged-up by a textual 18+ statement, modified, or reinterpreted.

Even AGED UP characters are now off limits. I’m sorry, but what in the actual fuck?

This essentially can ban most hentai out there. I would wager more than 90% of the artists my site shares could be subject to this ban.

It’s a slippery slope. And it’s one that is being led by financial institutions and politics.

For now, the question seems to be, where do artists go next?

Disclaimer: Here is the part of this post where I’m going to talk completely out of my ass.

I think we are moving towards an environment where the need for more independently run sites is more important.

Hosting your own content and building your own presence outside of social media is the only way to survive online today as a creator.

That doesn’t avoid the payment processors, but that is where I think cryptocurrency should and will play a bigger role.
